Matchstick Race – Safety Preparedness
This document is intended to provide an overview for safely preparedness for the
Matchstick Race. Safety of all participants, volunteers and spectators is of primary
importance. A safe race depends on the actions and common sense of everyone involved.
2. Inclement Weather.
In the event of inclement weather on race day (including thunderstorms, lightning, high
winds, tornado watch or warning, extreme heat, extreme humidity, excessive rainfall or
other weather conditions deemed hazardous or unsafe), a decision may be made to delay
the start, cancel the race or terminate any or all races during the race. Delays in the start
of a race may occur, but in no case will the half marathon start later than 7:30 p.m. and
the 5K/10K race will not start after 8:00 p.m. The decision to delay or cancel the race
will be made by the race director and his decision will be final. No refunds will be
offered if a race is delayed, cancelled or terminated.
After the start of a race if a thunderstorm, lighting, excessive rainfall, or other conditions
deemed to be hazardous or unsafe arises, runners, volunteers and spectators are instructed
to seek shelter in a safe location along the course. Places with shelter could include the
closet building, cars, shelters in the city parks along the route, including, Miller Field,
Wintergreen, Wadsworth High School, Valley View or a nearby welcoming home (in the
event of severe weather or dangerous conditions). Under such conditions, shuttle buses
will be deployed to transport participants and volunteers to the designated parking lot.
3. Medical issues.
In the event of a medical emergency, 911 should be called immediately. Do not rely on
race volunteers or race participants to treat a medical emergency.
There will be a first aid tent available at the finish to address minor, non-emergency
4. Other Issues.
If other issues arise where assistance is needed, the race course will be staffed with
Wadsworth Police Officers, volunteer course monitors, and zone leaders. The Police and
zone leaders will be equipped with communication devises to provide assistance.
However, in the event of an emergency 911 should be utilized.
